Blazed & Amused: The Best of D.C.’s Comedy on Cannabis

Comedy’s Best Friend
Cannabis and comedy: name a more dynamic duo. And here in D.C., we’ve got both on lock. Our weed? Only the finest. The comedy scene? Killer.
D.C. gave the world Dave Chappelle and Wanda Sykes. Enough said.
You might not catch Chappelle at an underground club anymore, but his successor is out there, and this city has never stopped producing them. From stand up to Shakespeare, there’s something for everyone and shows going every night of the week.
The perfect night out does exist: start at the dispensary, pick a strain for the mood, consume responsibly, and hit play on your inner laugh track at one of D.C.’s favorite comedy clubs.
Where to See Comedy (While Stoned)
From cannabis lounge sets to dedicated comedy clubs, join us for a giggle tour of the DMV’s hottest spots for a good laugh.
DC Comedy Loft: It’s Friday night and the gummy’s hitting as hard as the jokes. Welcome to DC’s top spot for local and national talent. The intimate atmosphere plus reliably hilarious acts makes DC Comedy Loft the Layer Cake of comedy clubs; your go-to, tried-and-true favorite. Blaze one up beforehand and settle in for a night of guaranteed belly laughter.
Drunk Shakespeare: They’re drunk, you’re three hits in, death by poison has never been funnier. Is it tragedy? Is it romance? Or is it pure, unfiltered comedy, just as Shakespeare intended. We’re certain The Bard would be proud. Both of Drunk Shakespeare’s poignant adaptation of Romeo and Juliet and your choice to enjoy it thoroughly baked.
Hotbed: D.C.’s premier independent comedy production company, Underground Comedy, just got a permanent address. Years in the making, finally a home to match the hype, Hotbed is the underground scene that graduated to a stage without losing any of its edge. With free shows seven days a week, ball out beforehand on some premium concentrate and let the professionals take care of the rest.
Get to the Giggle: Finally, the weed gods have answered our prayers: comedy nights in a cannabis lounge. Come for the strain selection, stay for the stand up. Check out fresh local talent with Get to the Giggle’s pop-up comedy nights hosted at Blunt Sluts DC.
Encore Comedy at Meinelschmidt Distillery (Hagerstown, MD): It’s not only D.C. getting the laughs. Hagerstown is holding it down with standup shows featuring writers from SNL, The Onion, and more. Double down on the recreation with a recreational weed pit-stop before the show at our Hagerstown location. Nothing like cracking a cold one (weed-infused, that is) before settling in for a night of comedy.
Local Comedian Spotlight
And with the city’s top-notch underground scene comes its shining stars of local talent.
Lafayette Wright: A decade deep in the D.C. comedy scene, Lafayette Wright is an enigmatic performer with the kind of brain you want to live in for an hour. He’s done the Kennedy Center, college tours, and Kevin Hart’s Comedy Central show Hart of the City. Catch him while you can; he’s now splitting his time between DC and NYC.
Shelley Kim: Topping all of DC’s comedy lists, find her on PBS and CBS, as well as the Washington Post’s 10 funniest comedians working in the city right now. She’s opened for Roy Wood Jr. and Jordan Klepper on a sold-out tour and shared the stage with some of the best in the game. Sharp, self-aware, and deceptively cutting, you’ll need a sativa to keep up with her fast-paced wit.
Benny Nwokeabia: D.C.-born, then raised in Switzerland by Ethiopian and Nigerian parents, Benny’s multi-cultural background gives shape to his unique comedic voice. He’s taken his captivating storytelling global and was named, alongside Shelley Kim, one of D.C.’s top ten funniest comedians.
Get Stoned, Get Giggly & Discover Local Acts
Who doesn’t wish they’d seen Wanda Sykes when she was performing D.C.’s underground comedy circuit? Or Dave Chappelle, already captivating audiences at age fourteen.
Well, you’ve got nightly standup shows and a city full of rising stars. Now it’s just a matter of which venue to hit first and which strain to pair with it. Our rec? Take a walk on the sativa side with the giggle train’s heaviest-hitting fuel, a Limonene-leaning strain.
Get ready to laugh so hard you’ll think it was ab day with a Lemon Royale pre-roll and set served up hot from one of D.C.’s finest.
Don’t sleep on the local scene; today’s open mic is tomorrow’s Netflix.
