Monuments and Mary Jane: A Cannabis Walking Tour of Washington D.C.

A completely unauthorized but highly recommended guide to D.C.’s best sightseeing, post-smoke

June in D.C. is best enjoyed at golden hour, post-joint. It’s an indisputable fact. Why else would the city have cannabis lounges, perfectly positioned to get you high and then send you out for an evening of wandering past D.C.’s top sightseeing?

Knowing the perfect loop to walk: that’s an art. Knowing the best cannabis pairings for each walk’s mood? A skill cultivated only by the greats. Here’s the official, baked walking guide for locals and tourists alike.

And, side note here: as locals with jobs, we’re more of the ‘blazing-into-the-sunset types’, but for those who are blessed enough to have a real summer vacay, consider these walks a perfect daytime stroll as well.

Loop One: The Classic

It’s a classic for a reason. Yes, it’s the one everyone does, but done right. Start at the Capitol end of the National Mall, work your way west, and end at Lincoln, perfectly timed for sunset.

Now for the important part. You’re about to get nice and baked with Honest Abe. Naturally, this calls for something mellow, introspective. Think balance: indica with enough sativa to make sure you don’t call it quits on the fifth Capitol step. Your companion for “The Classic”: Banana Acai Mints.

Capitol Steps

The steps are a tempting munchie break: resist. It’s way too early in the walk to give in to the power of the indica.

WWII Memorial Pit Stop

*Insert sigh of relief* Yes, it’s snack time. Lots of great seating with front-row fountain views. Let the introspection kick in. And the munchies.

Washington Monument

It looks suspiciously like a … joint? Don’t try to smoke it. Typically, the police don’t respond well to that. Just enjoy the fact that you’ve got the best monument views in D.C., plus the perfect level of elevation to soak them in.

Lincoln Memorial & Reflecting Pool

Honest Abe, larger than life, begging you to climb up and sit on his lap. Again, just don’t. Instead, celebrate the end of a perfect stroll with sunset at the Reflecting Pool. It’s really just so beautiful, we won’t even try to insert a joke here.

Congratulations, you can now call yourself an official Mall Walker. With so much historic significance packed into such a concentrated area, you can do this one infinitely, always finding some new intrigue.

Loop Two: High Vibes

Take this walking tour on slow-mo, with enough snacks to power you through until dinner. And yes, you’re welcome, we’re pairing this one with both weed and dining. But first and foremost, the weed. It’s upbeat, it’s ‘spring-in-your-step,’ it’s… Berry Payton!

FDR Memorial

Something for everyone; bronze sculpture, great water feature, rustic-looking stones, even a statue of a terrier for the dog lovers. A 10/10 memorial. Well done.

MLK Memorial

A leisurely stroll along the banks of the Tidal Basin brings you to another ‘hats-off’ monument. It’s massive. It’s dramatic. And the name of the material? Shrimp pink granite. But don’t get too hungry, we promise the shrimp comes later.

Floral Library

Open 24 hours, so no matter the hour you timed your walk, you can catch a natural high with a hit of hundreds of blooming tulips.

Jefferson Memorial

End the walk with the sun setting into the Tidal Basin and epic views from the steps of the Jefferson Memorial. If you have it to yourself, it’s a really fun echo chamber. If there are other people around, give it a try anyway and apologize after.

And Now for the Shrimp

End with dinner drinks at Pink Tiger on the Wharf. And yes, definitely don’t miss the Crispy Shrimp.

Loop Three: Hidden Gems in D.C.

So you’ve done the monuments. Whether you live here or not, it’s time to stroll like a local with a neighborhood walk. Less tourist, more D.C. While you’re at it, smoke like a local too. Pair this one with some District Cannabis original Grapefruit Gelato.

Meridian Hill Park

Start at Meridian Hill Park. ‘Wow-factor’ dialed up to full volume. D.C. loves its dramatic fountains, and this one certainly doesn’t disappoint.

Columbia Heights

Walk down 16th Street, cut east, and head through the Columbia Heights neighborhood. If it’s daytime, pop into the Mexican Cultural Institute; if not, take the cultural route through your tastebuds with a snack stop at El Jardín.

Mount Pleasant Street

Loop back towards your starting point along Mount Pleasant Street. And with that Grapefruit Gelato still in your system, what’s better than topping off some tacos with a light snack in the park? Pit stop at Each Peach to make your cheese dreams come true.

End where you began, blazed, happy, and with a very full belly.

The Best Part? It’s Free

D.C. is basically an outdoor museum. Where all the best exhibits are totally free. But sometimes we forget all this and close our computers at the end of the day only to sit at home and scroll Instagram for hours.

But we’re here to say enough’s enough! It’s June. The flowers are in bloom, the weed is also in bloom. Let’s get high, take a walk, and feel really good about ourselves for getting off the couch.
