The Greener Guide to Earth Day

Earth Day is here, and we’re taking a moment to appreciate Mother Earth’s finest work—rolled, packed, and ready.

But wait. Peace, love, and 44 tons of CO2 emissions a year?

That’s right. Since legalization, cannabis cultivation has been guzzling resources, using up to 4–17x more energy than a typical greenhouse, with a single plant drinking up to 6 gallons of water a day. Not the vibe.

Here’s the thing though: it doesn’t have to be this way. But it’s on all of us in the industry to fix it.

Mother Nature’s Take on Getting High

When cultivated legally and sustainably, cannabis’s effects work like a feel-good drug for the planet. Talk about a natural high.

Weed breaks up compacted soil, feeds the microbes living in it, and even removes heavy metals. Turns out even the earthworms are potheads. And so are the bees.

Pollinators one-up even the stoners in their pursuit of that skunky, floral, fruity, citrusy thing that, by official terms, is known as “terpenoid essence.” It’s all part of the same spring cycle—plants waking up and trees popping off into green leaves that help clean the air.

Eco-Disaster Meets Your Stash

Legal weed, the stuff we fought so hard for, is delivering a blow that hits harder than Maryland’s notorious 33% weed tax hike. When legalization arrived, the industry went almost entirely indoors and hydroponic grows took over.

Indoor, however, meant plugging the most energy-hungry grow system directly into the grid. To put it simply: one kilo of fire indoor produces 46,000kg of carbon emissions, or the equivalent of that of 3 million cars

We love a potent nug as much as the next guy, but we need to find better ways of growing it. Call us hippies, but at District Cannabis, when we crunched the numbers and the damage outweighed the dank, we knew there had to be a better solution.

Greener Growing

As they say, Earth Day is every day. Here at District Cannabis, we take a ‘plant what you preach’ approach with greener growing 365 days of the year. And hey, we can always do better; we’re committed to tapping into sustainable grow tech, and we’re always looking for the next way to level up.

Putting both plant and planet first, our fire flower is cultivated using some of the greenest tech in the game: Dutch Greenhouses. AI-powered greenhouses straight from the Netherlands. We’ve partnered with the OG grow masters at Hoogendoorn and our custom greenhouse gives you terpy, eco-friendly bud cultivated with “smart software and state-of-the-art hardware”.

We’re talking 90% less water and fertilizer, plus sun-powered to slash energy use by 40%. Where other grows are cranking dehumidifiers to combat indoor’s swampy side effects, our high-tech exchanger and coil system does it all while bringing energy use down another 30%.  The earth’s a big fan. And with our terps dialed in to peak potency, we can bet you the bees would be too.

For this year’s Earth Day sesh, may we suggest some Dutch-grown Super Silver Dawg? While you’re at it, pick up some SDG OG grown by our friends at Sunmed, who are just as obsessed with Dutch Greenhouses as we are. Whether you’re celebrating on the official date of April 22nd (suspiciously close to 4/20…) or maybe just every day, how about doing one right by Mother Nature and skipping right to the real green stuff.

Support a Dutch Greenhouse, lower the greenhouse gases. Something like that. You get high, the planet’s CO2 gets low, everyone’s happy.

Happy Earth Day!
