What to Do in DC in January. And What to Smoke While You’re Doing It

January in DC is cold. Stupid cold, you could say. Hell-nah-not-going-outside cold. But while Congress is on break and the tourists are hibernating in underground dens in the woods, it’s actually one of the best months to experience the city. You’ve just got to dress right (wool socks, people). And smoke right.

Here’s your guide to pairing the perfect strain with DC’s best winter activities.

ZooLights: Mimosa

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo turns into a sparkly winter wonderland with thousands of twinkling lights. You need a sparkly strain to match the vibe.

Strain Pairing: Mimosa is a sativa-dominant hybrid often described as bright, citrusy, and easygoing. It’s commonly enjoyed for social settings and pairs well with twinkling lights, winter crowds, and overpriced hot chocolate.

ZooLights only runs through January 3, so don’t miss it.

Ice Skating at the National Sculpture Garden: Lemon Royale

Ice skating on the National Mall’s rink requires balance, coordination, and confidence. Do you look like a newborn giraffe? Yes. Does it matter? Yes. But not that much. The point is to stay safe and have fun.

Strain Pairing:Lemon Royale is often described as bright and cheerful, with a reputation for keeping things light and upbeat. It’s commonly paired with activities that require a good sense of humor.

DC Snowball Fight: Cold Fusion

Every winter, DC hosts a massive public snowball fight. It’s… extremely wholesome. Hundreds of strangers of all ages hitting each other with snow and screaming. The cutest kind of chaos.

Strain Pairing: Cold Fusion is an indica often described as chill but not heavy.

To find out when the snowball fight will be, follow the Washington DC Snowball Fight Association on Facebook.

See the Wizards Play the Lakers at Capital One Arena: Strawberry Candy #4

On January 30th, the Wizards will play the Lakers at Capital One Arena. Whether you’re a diehard fan or just there for the halftime popcorn cannon, it’s always a good time.

Strain Pairing: Strawberry Candy #4 is a hybrid often described as mellow and balanced. It’s commonly enjoyed for staying present and enjoying the moment without zoning out.

The sweet, candy-like flavor profile pairs nicely with arena nachos—especially if your taste buds are tuned up for it.

Pandas Playing in the Snow: Goat Piss

Back to the National Zoo. But for this one, wait until it snows. Watching Panda bears play in the snowis just really something special. Since Bao Li and Qing Bao came back last January, the whole DMV has fallen in love. Don’t miss out on these vibe idols.

Strain Pairing: Goat Piss is often described as funky and unpretentious. Some people enjoy it for slow winter days and low-effort outings.

Especially when you’re in the right winter mindset.

The Bottom Line

DC in January is underrated. Cold? Yes. But with so much fun to be had, frankly, who cares. In the DMV, a little cold can’t hold us back.

Bundle up, plan ahead, and get out there. The city is yours.
